The Greening of Retail in Westport, CT

One of the many reasons to live in a town like Westport is the town’s continued commitment to the environment. Do you simply throw all those plastic bags from Trader Joe’s/The Gap/The Little Kitchen away? In order to encourage the use of reusable checkout bags, the Town of Westport, CT has enacted an ordinance effective March 19,2009 banning the use of plastic bags for retail checkout of purchased goods. The ordinance applies to retail establishments, restaurants, flea markets, sidewalk sales and farmer’s markets. Smart marketing would suggest that these establishments make reusable bags available for sale. A boon to our waterways and marine life and less impact on our landfill.
